Welcome

TThe Locating Slavery’s Legacies page of Elon University is a publicly accessible database of information that reflects the work of the Committee on Elon History and Memory. In August 2018, President Connie Ledoux Book announced the launch of the Commemoration Committee, now the Committee on Elon History and Memory, to explore questions related to historical memory and collective identity at Elon University. A university-wide committee of 12 faculty, staff and students was appointed to carry out the work, thereby joining the ranks of colleges and universities who are revisiting the stories institutions of higher education tell about themselves. In compiling the report, the Committee continued the work of others at Elon who have celebrated Black achievement while speaking against White supremacy and anti-Black racism for many years. The Committee’s aim is to tell a more authentic version of the past that offers the opportunity to create a more inclusive and just future. Not all the episodes described in the Committee report are represented in this database. The items that do appear represent episodes in which some object or person has been visibly memorialized.
