Morgan’s Steep is a scenic overlook along the perimeter of the campus of the University of the South. It looks over the small town of Cowan, Tennessee, offering a beautiful view of the valley. Morgan’s Steep is a popular location for hikers and Sewanee students. An old myth attached to the site, shared with every generation of Sewanee students, attributes its name to the Confederate General Oliver Hunt Morgan, who supposedly rode his horse off the cliff to escape pursuing U.S. soldiers and survived the plummet. The story is untrue. Morgan’s Steep, like many other geographical areas located around Sewanee's campus, was named after the Louisiana cotton planter Oliver J. Morgan, one of the original benefactors to the University of the South.
