Upon its founding in 1889, Potter College of Arts and Letters was originally named the Potter College for Young Ladies, a women's college in Bowling Green. Founded by the Reverend B.F. Cabell, it was named Potter College after Pleasant J. Potter, an enslaver. He had donated $5000 to the building of the school, so he was commemorated in the name. The college was built on about seven acres facing downtown Bowling Green, with a Civil War fort built by Confederates in 1861 near the back of the site. After the women's college closed, the property was bought by the state to be a part of the Western Kentucky State Normal School’s campus. Potter College of Arts and Humanities opened as a college in 1965, and later went through three name changes, ending in the early 2000s as what it remains today, the Potter College of Arts and Letters.
