Flag commemorating the Battle of New Market

During the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864, the VMI Corps of Cadets carried the original flag into battle agaist the Union army. Tradition holds that the original flag was shortly therafter destroyed by cadets to avoid its capture during the June 1864 raid on VMI by the Union army, although there is apparantly no documentation to support this story. The flag housed at the VMI Museum today is a replica of the original flag.

The New Market Flag has on one side, a white background with Lady Virginia standing on Tyranny like the Virginia state flag. The opposite side similarly has a white background. In the middle is a round with a depiction of George Washington, two American flags, two cannons, and a bald eagle.

Under Lady Viginia it says, “Sic Semper Tyrannus” (Thus Always to Tyrants) and also says “Virginia Military Institute”. The reverse side says, “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of Many, One).
