Whitefoord Smith was one of Wofford College's original faculty members, serving as professor of English

A Charleston native, Whitefoord Smith was named for his grandmother's Whitefoord ancestors, who were Scottish. After graduating from South Carolina College, Smith left the Presbyterian church of his upbringing and joined the Methodist Church. He joined the South Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, serving churches for the next two decades. He attended the General Conference that saw Methodism divided into Northern and Southern wings, and helped prepare the hymnal for the southern church. After initially declining, he joined the Wofford College faculty in early 1856 as Professor of English. He left Wofford briefly in 1859-60 to serve as president of Columbia College, but returned to Wofford after a year. He remained on the faculty until elected professor emeritus in 1885. The 1860 census shows that he and his wife owned enslaved persons.
