All Saints' Chapel Historical Windows: stained glass windows dedicated to the University of the South Centennial

Between 1957 and 1961, the leadership of the University of the South installed four stained-glass windows for the narthex (the western entryway) of its newly completed All Saints' Chapel to celebrate the University's first centennial. The windows claim to tell the history of the University's first century through a chronological array of significant episodes and scenes. They reflect concerns and values of the 1950s, the era when they were produced, and underscore the alignment of the University in the 1950s with the "Old South" and the Confederacy. The windows say nothing about slavery or its connection to the founding of the University or about the Black people who labored at the University. The windows thus reinforce the “Lost Cause” narrative of the antebellum South and the Confederacy (commemorated by the inclusion of the seal of the Confederacy in the first window) during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The chaplain of the University removed the Confederate seal in 2019.
