Marker on grave of Abraham Van Vleck [?]

Located in University Cemetery, University of the South, this marble block etched with "CSA" (Confederate States of America or Army) appears on a grave without an identifying headstone. However, it is immediately next to the grave of Emma Van Vleck, widow of Abraham Van Vleck, who served in Marshall's Company, Tennessee Artillery (Steuben Artillery), C.S. Army. Van Vleck was killed in the battle of Chickamauga in 1863. He had lived in Sewanee in 1863, and census records identify him as a "county surveyor."

The stone is marble and measures 6 inches by 6 inches square. Its height or depth is unknown.
