Allen Casher Gipson was one of the first white settlers on Sewanee mountain and donated a large tract of land to the campus of the University of the South (the "Domain").

Allen Casher Gipson was born and raised in Laurens County, South Carolina, and, according to U.S. Census records, his father was an enslaver. Gipson served in the Tennessee Mounted Infantry during the Cherokee War and the 13th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He moved from Roarks Cove to Sewanee where he ran a general store located directly across from the depot. Later, he and Tom Gipson co-owned a store in the building now home to Shenanigans restaurant. He is buried in the University of the South Cemetery.
