This framed composite of the 1871 faculty of the University of the South is hung on the wall of the men’s restroom on the first floor of the Sewanee Inn on the University's campus. Of the eleven men shown in the composite, at least six and possibly seven were Confederate military veterans: [1] Josiah Gorgas, professor of engineering and later Vice-Chancellor and afterward, President of the University of Alabama; [2] the Rt. Rev. Charles Todd Quintard, Episcopal Bishop of Tennessee and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the South; [3] T. F. Sevier, assistant in the Grammar (or college preparatory) School; [4] John Barnwell Elliott, professor of chemistry; [5] Caskie Harrison, professor of ancient languages (his Confederate record has not been confirmed); [6] the Rev. Frances Asbury Shoup, professor of mathematics; [7] Robert Dabney, professor in various subjects, including metaphysics, English literature, political economy, and history.
