Lyman, Frederick Wolcott

Frederick Lyman Hall

Frederick Wolcott Lyman (1849-1931) moved to Winter Park in 1883 where he worked closely with Winter Park founders, Loring Chase and Oliver Chapman, to establish the Winter Park Company, which was integral in city planning, public works projects, and segregation efforts in the 1880s. Unlike many towns, Winter Park was platted as a segregated community with the Black section of town offering much smaller lots intended for the servants of the wealthy White citizens.

At the same time, Lyman also contributed to the religious culture in Winter Park and helped found and fund the First Congregational Church of Winter Park. The church was active from the beginning in aiding African Americans. It helped fund the construction of a sister church in the African American neighborhood of Winter Park, worked closely with the Black community of Eatonville, and opposed the state's segregationist policies from the 1930s on to the extent that the KKK burned a cross on the property in the 1950s.

Lyman was a principal investor in Rollins College and served as President of the Rollins College Corporation. To commemorate his instrumental contributions to the founding of Rollins College, Frederick Lyman Hall was erected in his honor in 1936. The dormitory was built in Spanish-style and featured a stucco finish and ivy work.
