The Old South Fiesta; A one-time fundraising event and parade

Starting in 1937 and continuing for about three decades, Rollins College hosted an annual, community-wide event called Fiesta. Fiesta was a weekend-long celebration that was meant to “raise funds through fun.” The celebration would consist of games, a parade through Winter Park where different organizations on campus would build elaborate floats, the Miss Rollins Beauty Pageant, live music, and even a roller coaster one year. Each year there was a different theme, and in 1963, the theme was the Old South Fiesta. The official event program has a caricature of a Southern man holding a rifle with a Confederate flag attached to it. Some attractions listed in the program included a Confederate Banquet, March Thru Georgia, Dixieland, Blue vs. Grey, Southern Belles, and an Old South Ball. The Bo Diddley Trio performed live music at the event. The Co-chairmen of Fiesta 1963 were Alan B. Lipsky and Peter A. Marino. They were featured in the event program posing in front of a Confederate flag. Likewise, the student committee in charge of planning the event was called The Southern Ladies and Gentlemen of the Fiesta Committee. This event occurred the academic year before the first Black students attended Rollins.
