Staples Auditorium; Auditorium dedicated to Thomas S. Staples

Staples Auditorium was built in 1951 and named for Dean Thomas S. Staples after his death in 1958. Staples was a history professor and dean of students whose book, Reconstruction in Arkansas, 1862-1874, reflected his affiliation with the Dunning School. The building stands as a memorial to Staples and his contributions to Hendrix College.
Designed by Wittenberg, Delony, and Davidson and funded mostly by the Methodist Churches of Arkansas, the building of Staples Auditorium and Greene Chapel (attached to the same building) cost $330,000. In the summer of 1977, a Schantz organ was installed. The building was last renovated in 1988.
Today, Staples Auditorium hosts two of the largest events on campus: New Student Orientation and Miss Hendrix, a drag competition that benefits Central Arkansas charities.

Staples Auditorium is a large, red brick building. The Green Chapel juts out to the left of the entrance, and the auditorium extends straight back from the main doors. There’re some marble decorations on the front. The front of the building only reads, "Chapel and Auditorium." The name "Staples Auditorium" is on a small, iron sign to the left of the entrance. The auditorium itself has a stage with video and lighting capabilities, and holds 816 people.
