Locating Slavery's Legacies @ Sewanee: The University of the South

As we move from the Lobby toward the Sewanee Inn's largest conference room, we see a number of large framed images.  Along the hallway is a set of reproductions of naturalistic illustrations of birds by the famous early nineteenth-century artist John James Audubon, labeled with a plaque as "The Audubon Gallery." These images were reproduced from a folio of Audubon prints in the University’s Special Collections. At the end of the hallway is a painting of the “second founding” (1867) of the University of the South. It hangs over the fireplace outside McCardell Hall.
