David Duncan Wallace was an 1874 Wofford graduate who was the college's professor of history and economics from 1899-1947.

The great-grandson of original faculty member David Duncan, Dr. David Duncan Wallace was born in Columbia, SC in 1874. He graduated from Wofford College in 1894 and earned his PhD in history at Vanderbilt University in 1899. Throughout a career that spanned a half-century, Wallace was a prolific researcher and writer about South Carolina history and government. His 4-volume History of South Carolina, published in 1934, remains a significant resource for the state’s early history. He wrote the centennial history of Wofford College, and was the campus’s resident historian for much of his life. His historical research and writing reflected and supported the prevailing attitudes on race among white southerners the time. For much of his career, he lived in the campus house previously occupied by President James Carlisle. He died in 1951, shortly after completing his History of Wofford College.
