Green's View; an overlook dedicated to the memory of William Mercer Green

Green’s View, along with the campus’s other views, was named by a committee of founders of which Green was a part, himself. William Mercer Green was born in North Carolina on May 2, 1789. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and ordained as a priest in 1823. He was appointed to be the first Episcopal Bishop of Mississippi in 1850, where he was an outspoken supporter of secession and the Christianization of the enslaved. As a prominent leader in the Episcopal Church, Green was a member of the original Board of Trustees and therefore heavily involved in the fundraising, curriculum, and hiring in the early years of the University’s foundation. William Mercer Green became Sewanee’s Chancellor in 1866 and served until his death in 1887. Green’s View continues to be a prominent location on campus for hiking, watching the sunset, and other activities.

Green's View is an overlook that sits at the end of Green's View Road. The view allows a look over the bluff and into the valley that is filled with farmland and woods. It has a gravel circle and various parking options. There are rocks and a bench in addition to the stone wall/fence that sits at the end of the bluff.
