Plaque memorializing Elizabeth Delia Dixon-Carroll

Elizabeth Delia Dixon-Carroll (1899 -1934) was a beloved doctor who worked for Meredith College since its opening in 1899. Dr. Carroll was the first female practicing physician in Raleigh, North Carolina, and she was an advocate for women’s suffrage. She argued that women having the ability to vote would increase votes for the Democrats and, in turn, strengthen the white supremacy movement.
After Dixon-Carroll died in 1934, the Meredith College Alumnae Association sold miniature plaster plaques of the coin-like portraiture of Dr. Carroll. The Alumnae sold 200 at $1.50 each to raise the money for the bronze plaque presented at Founder’s Day 1935. The Commemorative plaque hung first in Johnson Hall before being moved to the Student Health and Wellness Center when it opened and was dedicated to Elizabeth Delia Dixon-Carroll in 1962. Currently, the plaque resides in the Remote Stacks of Carlyle Campbell Library after research in a college Anti-Racism Initiative led to a name change for the health center in 2021.
