This portrait of Leonidas Polk as a young clergyman is part of a series of Episcopal founders of the University of the South hanging in the Sewanee Inn. Polk was a prominent enslaver and Confederate general. He advocated for Sewanee to serve as a place of education for the upper echelons of Southern society, but did not live to see its first students matriculate.
