The Walk of Fame was created in 1929 by then-President Hamilton Holt to honor significant historical figures. The memorial is located in the center of campus around Mills Lawn. Zora Neale Hurston’s stone, installed on March 22, 1987, honors one of America’s most influential literary figures and cultural anthropologists. Hurston (1891–1960), who spent much of her life in Eatonville, Florida, was a trailblazing writer known for works like "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and her efforts to preserve African American and Afro-Caribbean folklore. Her legacy highlights a deep commitment to celebrating the richness of Black culture and oral traditions.
The timing of Hurston’s inclusion on the Walk of Fame coincided with a broader resurgence in interest in her work and legacy. In 1987, Eatonville, Florida, celebrated its centennial as one of the oldest incorporated African American municipalities in the United States. That year, community organizer N. Y. Nathiri founded the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community (P.E.C.), an organization dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the town’s historical and cultural significance.
Hurston had a long connection to Rollins College, which began in the 1930s when she collaborated with theater director Robert Wunsch on projects aimed at bringing African American folklore to the stage. Despite challenges posed by the racial dynamics of the time, Hurston’s work with Wunsch exemplified her determination to highlight Black culture through the arts.
