Background and Context
The Ku Klux Klan gave the College of William & Mary a flagpole and U.S. flag and hosted an unveiling ceremony in 1926, which was allegedly attended by thousands. William & Mary President Julian Chander decided to accept the KKK's flag and flagpole from Hiram Wesley Evans, an Imperial Wizard of the KKK, despite his negative feelings about the organization. The site of the flagpole was originally at the corner of Boundary Street and Jamestown Road but was moved in the 1950s.
