Background and Context
Fred Rogers was awarded a plaque as the Alumni of the Year award in 1970. At that point in time, this prize was the fourth one to ever be presented in the history of the College. Fred Rogers was awarded that prize due to his outstanding contributions to education. His show “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” was groundbreaking in terms of civil rights. In 1969, which was a year before this award was awarded, Fred Rogers and a black character named Officer Clemmons played by François Clemmons shared a pool together despite the ongoing segregation in the United States.
