Painted portrait of Nicholas Hamner Cobbs
-
This portrait of Nicholas Hamner Cobbs, first Episcopal Bishop of Alabama, is among the historical portraits of the founders and officials of the University of the South hanging in Convocation Hall. During his time in Alabama, Cobbs was a slaveholder and defended slavery as divinely sanctioned and protected by law. He urgently pressed Alabama Episcopalians to evangelize their human property.
