Painted Portrait of Thomas Frank Gailor

This portrait of Thomas Frank Gailor, third Episcopal Bishop of Tennesee, is among the historical portraits of the founders and officials of the University of the South hanging in Convocation Hall. Gailor was ordained as an Episcopal Priest in 1880 following finishing seminary at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. In 1882, he became a professor in the Theological Department of the University of the South and later also served as the University chaplain. Gailor then served as vice-chancellor of the University of the South from 1890-1893. Elected Bishop of Tennesee in 1898, Gailor continued to assist the University of the South, eventually being appointed chancellor in 1908, a position in which he served until his death in 1935. The artist, William Browning Cooper, died in 1900, thus putting the probably production date of this painting in the 1890s.
