Headstone of Robert Lewis Dabney

This grave site was commissioned by the Union Presbyterian Seminary upon Robert Lewis Dabney's death on January 3, 1898. Robert Lewis Dabney's will stated that he was to be buried at Hampden-Sydney College in the Union Presbyterian Seminary cemetery located next to Bortz Library. Union was originally located in Hampden-Sydney VA adjacent to the HSC campus before it moved to Richmond in 1898. Dabney served as a chaplain in the Confederate Army and later as chief of staff to Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. After the war, he continued his teaching and ministerial career, publishing several books including "A Defense of Virginia, and Through Her, The South" in 1867. Dabney was a defender of slavery and later of the Lost Cause. He was buried in his Confederate uniform and his wife and sons are buried along side him.

Backside Inscription: In unshaken loyalty of devotion to his friends, his country and his religion, firm in misfortune, ever active, in earnest endeavour, he laboured all his life for what he loved with a faith in good causes that was one with his faith in God.
