Rev. Albert M. Shipp was the second president of Wofford College.

Albert Micajah Shipp was born in Stokes County, NC. He joined the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1841, serving churches for about 7 years. He became president of the Greensboro Female College in 1848 before joining the University of North Carolina faculty in 1850. He declined election to Wofford College’s original faculty in 1854, but became president of Wofford College in 1859. Shipp and his wife, Martha Gillespie, owned 22 enslaved persons in 1860. During his presidency, most students left the college for Confederate service. The college's trustees invested the college endowment in Confederate bonds and in bank stocks. Following the end of the Civil War, Shipp and his faculty colleagues managed to keep the college open, despite a lack of financial resources. Shipp resigned the Wofford presidency in 1875 to join the theology department at Vanderbilt University, where he remained until 1885. In retirement, he lived in Marlboro County, SC.
