Vanessa Victor receives the Matthews Travel Endowment Award at the End of Year Reception; the Annual celebration for highlighting important faculty and staff at Davidson College.
Background and Context
On June 17th, 2022, Davidson College faculty and staff gathered at the annual end-of-year staff and faculty appreciation event. Among those honored was Vanessa M. Victor, an administrative assistant for the Anthropology, Education, Mathematics, Philosophy, and Russian Studies departments since her arrival at Davidson College in 2005. Due to her dedication, hard work, and positive influence, members of the Davidson College community nominated and award her with a Matthews Travel Endowment Grant. This prestigious award was established and funded by Frank Matthews ’49 in the 1990s in memory of his brothers, Eugene Robinson Matthews ’36 and James Houston Matthews ’50. It is given annually to a staff and faculty member “in due recognition of the outstanding and unselfish service rendered by Davidson by members of the college family.” The $20,000 award covers travel for the recipients and their families to enjoy “opportunities for personal renewal and enjoyment."

As one of the few African American employees recognized for the prestigious award, Victor burst into tears after hearing her name be called. She was the third and most recent African American recipient of this award. Amanda Jones, an African American employee in the Davis Café, also received the Spirit of Davison award which included a nominal cash award. As a result, this annual event was a pivotal moment for Davidson College and its history of African American employment from slavery to the present.
