Background and Context
An alumni publication places the dedication of the dormitory in 1953 in the name of the Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott, first Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of Georgia, as the second memorial to Sewanee’s founding bishops, Otey Memorial (now St. Mark and St. Paul) Parish being the first. The dedication of Elliott Hall and the memorials to Leonidas Polk in the newly completed All Saints’ Chapel all were in the context of the approaching centennial of the University. Publicity also linked the memorial to succeeding generations of Elliotts who were students, faculty members, administrators, or residents of Sewanee.

Construction of the building was completed in 1923 to serve as the Sewanee Inn, located on the recently completed Dixie Highway. In ca. 1928, the University converted it to dormitory use except in summer months. In 1953 the dormitory was dedicated as a memorial to Stephen Elliott.
