Founders' Day: Annual Celebration of the 1860 Founding of the University of the South

The celebration of the University of the South's founding was observed annually beginning in 1922 with a gala procession from the University's All Saints' Chapel to the site on campus ("Louisiana Circle") where the University's symbolic cornerstone was laid on October 10, 1860. This observance later became combined with "Parents" or "Family Weekend." In 2018, the University's administration added a new annual convocation, "Foundation Day," to celebrate the "re-founding" or "Second Founding" of the University, symbolized by the first matriculation of students on September 18, 1868. On the day of the first "Foundation Day" observance, the University official the EQB Monument (formerly the Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith Memorial). Today the annual event occurs on Family Weekend in mid-September and, no longer "Foundation Day," is called "Advent Convocation."
