Otho “Tobe” Johnson, former Davidson College janitor and significant African American businessman serving the college campus, passed away at the age of 40 on November 15, 1924. He died from a cerebral hemorrhage.
His funeral occurred on November 16, 1924. Notable attendees include his wife Mattie, his son Odell, his nephew Ralph Johnson (a prominent Davidson barber), his siblings Alice and Will, and community members, white and black. He was buried at Torrence Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery in Davidson. His grave now stands unmarked with no headstone. He is buried next to his wife.
