Stone memorializing John Hart

The “Walk of Fame” was created in 1929 by then-president Hamilton Holt to honor significant historical figures. The memorial is located in the center of campus around Mills Lawn.
Hailing from Hopewell Township, New Jersey, John Hart (1713-1779) was a local plantation owner and civic leader, serving as a member of the Provincial Assembly of New Jersey and judge for the Hunterdon County Courts System. Hart owned four enslaved individuals who worked his property. His example illustrates how the North was not immune to the institution of slavery. In 1776, Hart was elected to serve as a delegate from New Jersey for the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence. Upon his return to New Jersey after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Hart was elected to the first state general assembly. He therefore contributed to the development of the state’s earliest form of governance.
The stone is from part of the spring wall of John Hart’s original home in New Jersey.
