Dr. Frank Furniss Warren is Whitworth's longest serving president, serving from 1940 until his death in 1963, known for challenging racial norms by bringing Japanese American students to campus during World War II but taking less action during the early stages of the Civil Rights era.

Dr. Frank Furniss Warren is Whitworth's longest serving president serving from 1940 until his death in 1963. Dr. Warren was born in 1899 in Michigan. He would go on to attend three different colleges including Seattle Pacific College, where he would serve as the head of their Bible department from 1933 to 1940. During that time, he also was an interim pastor of three local churches. Then in 1940 he accepted the position of Whitworth president. During the start of his presidency, he accepted 20 Japanese American students so they could escape internment. He did this because of his early missionary work in Japan from 1925 to 1932. Later in his presidency, he did little to formally address growing unrest on campus over Civil Rights, and the governing sensibility of his era would best be defined as assimilationist. That said, during his time as president, Whitworth enjoyed significant growth, swelling from 364 student and 24 faculty members to 1,654 students to 67 faculty members. During his presidency, much of the groundwork for a more inclusive community was laid, particularly in the latter stages of the 1960s as Whitworth took more significant steps to recruit and to serve more African American students on campus.
