Legacy Weekend; one-time celebration commemorating 50th Years of African Americans in Residence at William & Mary

Throughout the 2017-2018 academic year, William & Mary commemorated and honored the first three African Americans in residence at William & Mary, who are referred to as the Legacy 3 by the university. Ms. Briley, Ms. Brown Strafer, and Ms. Ely were the first African American students to live in a residence hall at William & Mary, entering the university in Fall 1967 and graduated in May 1971. Although other African American students came before them, they were the first to live in a residence hall.
The "Building on the Legacy" year featured many special events, including The Lemon Project & 50-Year Commemoration Symposium: Building on the Legacy, "Desegregating Higher Education in Virginia: William and Mary in Historical Context." The year culminated with a celebration known as Legacy Weekend (April 12-14, 2018). The 50th Anniversary of African Americans in Residence Committee, chaired by Dr. Jacquelyn Y. McLendon, spearheaded the planning of the year and this weekend. There were many activities during Legacy Weekend, including "Soulful Storytelling with Onawumi Jean Moss," a panel with the Legacy 3, an Alumni Awards Dinner with the Legacy 3, a Black Opera Recital, and a walking tour of African American history at William & Mary.
