The “Walk of Fame” was created in 1929 by then-president Hamilton Holt to honor significant historical figures. The memorial is located in the center of campus around Mills Lawn.
On November 6, 1997, in commemorating their help with Africanafest and for contributions to Civil Rights Activism, Rollins College dedicated a stone to Danny Glover and Felix Justice. The college's president at the time was Rita Bornstein (1990-2004), and she presided over the unveiling ceremony.
Danny Glover (b. 1946) is an actor and a well-known activist. He and Felix Justice, another actor and Glover's longtime friend, were memorized because of their participation in the 1997 Rollins College Africanafest along with their contributions to Civil Rights. Africanafest, started in 1990, celebrated a new more diverse Rollins population. The highlight of the 1997 Africanafest was "An Evening with Martin and Langston," which saw Justice performing a dramatized sermon of Martin Luther King, Jr. followed by Glover reading and discussing the poetry of Langston Hughes. Langston Hughes was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance (the 1920s), known for writing about the lives of the average African American.
Glover, an actor, whose movie credits include Freedom Song (2000), Escape from Alcatraz (1979), and Predator 2 (1990). He has been an activist all his life, both on behalf of unions and workers and African Americans. He is also known for co-founding Robey Theatre Company in 1994, a nonprofit whose mission is to develop plays about the African American experience, and Louverture Films in 2005, a company dedicated to creating socially conscious films worldwide. He is also the recipient of 19 different awards given to him for his civil rights efforts and his acting skills.
