John Henry Hopkins Watercolors of the University of the South

These watercolors, reproductions of originals painted by John Henry Hopkins during his visit to Sewanee in the winter of 1859, compose a series of landscapes hanging in a lounge of the Sewanee Inn. The series of reproductions was specially created for and installed in the new Sewanee Inn for its opening in 2014.
The prints are displayed in the lounge opposite modern interpretations of the same locations by artist Nancy Rhett, a direct descendant of Stephen Elliott, a founding bishop of the University of the South, enslaver and defender of slavery, and friend of the artist Hopkins.
The originals are stored in the William R. Laurie University Archives and Special Collections. They are the only ones remaining from the original series; others were lost between that 1859 winter and the end of the Civil War.
