Background and Context
This portrait of Stephen Elliott, one of the founding bishops of the University of the South alongside Leonidas Polk and James H. Otey, was commissioned and painted at some point during the 19th century by an unknown artist. Elliott was born in 1806 in South Carolina. He became the first bishop of Georgia in 1840 and in 1844 became the provisional bishop of Florida. By the early 1850s, he was involved with the planning and fundraising for the future University of the South, which was proposed by Bishop Polk to the Episcopal Church, but he died before he could see its first class matriculate in 1867. This portrait currently hangs in the Sewanee Inn with a collection of other founders’ portraits.
