Mr. Rogers' Sweater and Tennis Shoes

Mr Rogers' sweater and tennis shoes were part of his iconic look from his hit TV show "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." This was a show where Mr. Rogers helped children deal with large emotions. He also used his platform to aid the Civil Rights Movement. He donated his sweater and tennis shoes to his alma mater. He attended and graduated from Rollins in 1951 with a degree in music. While at Rollins College, Fred Rogers served as chair of the Race Relations Committee where he advocated for Civil Rights on the Rollins campus. Through his position he collected books for Eatonville, fundraised for DePugh Nursing Home for African Americans, had fluorescent lights installed at the Hannibal Square library, and organized race relations, all while being a top student. The sweater and tennis shoes were an important part of the image of Mr. Rogers. This is becuase Mr. Rogers wore his iconic outfit in multiple varations on each episode of his show. He was wearing similar garmants to the ones donated when filming his groundbreaking episode number 1065 when he breaks social norms by sharing a pool with a black man playing the role of Officer Clemmons. While wearing his memorable sweater and tennis shoes, Mr. Rogers never shied away from what he believed in.
