On October 25th, 2012, Davidson student Rachel Cole interviewed Bethany Theresa Knox in the lounge of Cannon dorm for a class project collecting oral histories. Bethany Knox was a new employee at the time, working cleaning the student dorms. Knox shares the background and life experiences that have shaped her and her family. She also elaborates on the expansive community around her on and off campus.
Before working at Davidson College, Knox aspired to study criminal justice. She attended Mitchell Community College for two years after completing her GED. While she intended to attend a four-year college, caring for her grandmother in Cornelius, as well as her first son posed a challenge with transportation and work. She talks later in the interview about how important it is to her that her own children work to follow through with their education.
Interpersonal connections allowed Knox and her extended family to find work at Davidson College. Since her grandmother started at Davidson in the laundry, several members of Knox's immediate and extended family found employment at the college.
Though the interview focuses on her experiences at Davidson College, Knox has strong connections to the surrounding communities of Cornelius, Davidson, and Mooresville. Despite early challenges, such as frequent moves with her siblings and becoming a single mother in her youth, Knox jokes in the interview that she has the reputation of knowing or being related to everyone in the area, coming from a large family herself.
Growing up in a religious community allowed Knox's network to only expand. Members of Knox's family attend Torrence Chapel and while she and her husband attend New Cambridge Christian in Troutman, the church that her family leads and is most intertwined with is Hunter's Chapel in Cornelius.
