Biography
Richard M. Venable was born in Charlotte County, Va in 1839. Venable grew up in the surrounding area and graduated from Hampden-Sydney in 1857, and later became a trustee of the college. Before the Civil War, Venable also attended the University of Virginia where he studied engineering and mathematics. He served as a Major in the Confederate Army and after the war ended, became an engineering professor at LSU and also taught mathematics at Washington & Lee University. Later in his career, he became a successful businessman in Baltimore. In 1898, when Union Theological Seminary decided to move its campus from Hampden-Sydney to Richmond, he purchased the seminary buildings and land and donated them to the College, significantly expanding the physical campus.
