Dovie H. Howard, a native of Davidson, North Carolina, wife of James W. Howard, and mother of Rev. Brenda Tapia, worked at Davidson College and informally for college faculty, staff, and local families during the Jim Crow and post-desegregation eras.

Dovie Doretha Houston Howard, daughter of Logan Espie Houston and Alice Torrence Houston, was born in Davidson, NC on November 5, 1927. She had two sisters and three brothers. She attended Davidson Colored School and Huntersville Colored High School (later renamed Torrence-Lytle High School). After graduating in 1945, she briefly attended Johnson C. Smith University and transferred to the Band Beauty School to become a licensed beautician. She married James W. Howard, a Davidson College janitor, on February 8, 1949. Together, they had three daughters: Brenda Tapia, Cassandra Howard, and Beverly Bailey. She was active member of Davidson Presbyterian Church and held various roles throughout her lifetime.
At Davidson College, she formally worked at the Guest House, infirmary, college laundry, and fraternity house cook. She also worked as a domestic servant for Davidson College faculty, staff, and local families and became a teacher aide at an integrated Davidson school. At the end of her career, she worked as a supervisor at the Reeves Brothers Mill in the mid-1990s. She died on September 28, 2008 and is buried in the Christian Aid Society Cemetery.
