Shoup Memorial; a memorial dedicated to Francis A. Shoup

This memorial to Francis Asbury Shoup was placed by the Kirby-Smith Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The date of its placement is unknown, although it appears to have been erected in the early 1930s. According to an April 24, 1941, account in the student newspaper, the Sewanee Purple, a Civil War-era cannon dedicated to Shoup stood next to a "weather beaten old rock" on the site in the early 1930s. The Purple reports that the cannon was buried near the rock.
