Background and Context
An important source of fresh water for the University community, originally named for Episcopal Bishop Leonidas Polk of Louisiana, a University founder. Date of naming for the Rev. Francis W. Tremlett is unknown. Tremlett was an English clergyman in London who used his influence to win friends and support for the Confederate cause during the Civil War. He also assisted Sewanee's Vice-Chancellor Charles Todd Quintard (the Episcopal Bishop of Tennessee) during his trip to England in 1867 to raise funds for the opening of the University the next year. Tremlett used his connections with pro-Confederate aristocrats, business leaders, and politicians to put Quintard in touch with potential donors who would be in sympathy with bishop who had served as a Confederate chaplain during the Civil War.
