While serving as the 14th president of Whitworth College, Edward B. Lindaman used his Christian background to champion changes that focused on building a more inclusive and equitable campus that upheld racial justice and dignity.
Biography
Edward B. Lindaman was a visionary educator, a leader, and a futurist. Lindaman earned a B.S. at Pacific Lutheran University completed advanced studies at Claremont Graduate School (now Claremount Graduate University).
In the 1960’s he held posts at NASA as a systems analyst and manager for the Apollo Space Program. After helping mankind reach for the stars, he transitioned in 1970 to serve as president of Whitworth College, where his leadership and vision brought a new perspective to the college. While president he created the integration of faith and learning, a popular focus in evangelical universities and a system that continues as the backbone of the Whitworth education today, while also creating a wide range of policies to make students of all races feel welcome on campus. He openly called for racial justice reforms both at the College and societally. Under his tenure Whitworth grew in size, quality, and reputation. In 1979 he retired from the role of president.
To date he is the third longest serving Whitworth president. In his life time he worked for NASA, authored two books – Space: A New Direction for Mankind (Harper & Row, 1969) and Thinking in the Future Tense (Broadman, 1978) – established the Whitworth Foundation and the Office of Student Life, and oversaw construction of 11 new campus buildings.
Every four years, a professor is appointed to the “Lindaman Chair,” a position for someone who is known to be involved in the local community as well as national academics and social issues.
