Background and Context
During the commemoration of fifty years of African Americans in residence at William & Mary, William & Mary set aside a small area of land next to Jefferson Hall for a tribute garden. This space is near where WIlliam & Mary students Lynn Briley ’71, D.Sc. ’18, Karen Ely ’71, D.Sc. ’18 and Janet Brown Strafer ’71, M.Ed. ’77, D.Sc. ’18 began their four-years at the university in Fall 1967, as they lived in the basement of Jefferson Hall. They graduated in 1971. The garden was conceived by the William & Mary 50th Anniversary of African Americans in Residence Committee, chaired by Dr. Jacquelyn Y. McLendon.

The garden features Sankofa Seed statue, trees, shrubbery, and benches.
