The “Walk of Fame” was created in 1929 by then-president Hamilton Holt to honor significant historical figures. The memorial is located in the center of campus around Mills Lawn.
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) was the 34th President of the United States, serving from 1953-1961. Coming into office directly after Harry Truman, he followed through quickly on the former president’s plans to desegregate Washington D.C., and the military. His appointment of Governor Earl Warren to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice would eventually help in the Brown v. Board of Education decision and resulted in the banning of Jim Crow from Public Schools on May 17, 1954. Despite Eisenhower’s private discomfort on the matter of civil rights, he took quick steps to ensure the ruling of the Supreme Court was being followed regarding Brown v. Board. He deployed the military to Little Rock on September 25, 1957, and took control of the Arkansas National Guard to ensure that Black students could attend the school. Eisenhower felt that the president's duty was to ensure law and order, and as a result, he did not take a strong stance on the matter of race publicly. Rather, he remained nonpartisan.
Dwight Eisenhower's stone in the Rollins College Walk of Fame was added after 1956 after being sourced from Eisenhower Lock, St. Lawrence Seaway, Massena, New York. Eisenhower Lock was renamed as such in 1956. A specific date for the stone's installation cannot be found.
