Kappa Alpha Order
-
Kappa Alpha Order was a national fraternity originally founded at Washington University—now Washington and Lee—in 1865. The fraternity claims Robert E. Lee as its spiritual founder. The earliest Greek organization at Rollins College, the chapter was established on campus in 1927. Rollins’ KAO chapter overtly supported the Lost Cause, annually celebrating Lee’s birthday with an Old South weekend. The Chapter, well into the 1960s, refused to admit Jewish people, people of African descent, or Asians. The Chapter had a long history of bad behavior on and off campus involving property destruction, hazing, and racist and sexist behavior.
In 1985, Rollins College refused to allow the Chapter on campus housing for the final time. The group continued to exist off campus for several years, but in 1987 the national organization removed its charter. The same year, Rollins College passed a resolution refusing to allow Kappa Alpha Order to be recognized as a campus organization again.
