Stone memorializing Jackie Robinson

In January 2014, Rollins College added a stone to their “Walk of Fame.” The “Walk of Fame” was created in 1929 by then president Hamilton Holt to honor significant historical figures. The memorial is located in the center of campus around Mills Lawn. Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player to play in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was on the Brooklyn Dodgers, and made his debut on April 15, 1947. This game was the first integrated professional baseball game in history in the United States, which brought an end to about sixty years of segregation in the MLB. His legacy was recognized by important civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. in the following decades.
The stone placed at Rollins in the “Walk of Fame” said his name, and incorporated a paver from the Riverwalk at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, which was the site of this monumental game. There was a stone-laying ceremony on January 23, 2014, where the Rollins baseball team was joined by Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon Robinson. Sharon also gave a speech discussing her father’s legacy in Bush Auditorium after the ceremony. Her talk was called “Values, Baseball and Jackie Robinson.”
In the weeks following the placement of Jackie Robinson’s stone, an unknown party removed the stone from the “Walk of Fame” and it has yet to be returned. Whoever took the stone was never caught, and the stone has not been replaced. Likewise, there is no marker indicating that the stone is missing.

This stone was roughly a foot long, white, and laid in the Rollins College Walk of Fame, amongst a plethora of other stones dedicated to various historical figures. The stone incorporated a paver from the Riverwalk at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
