Janice Ratliff Building; Office Building dedicated to Janice Ratliff
Background and Context
The Janice Ratliff Building at Elon University is located adjacent to the Global Neighborhood and Loy Center, north of Moseley Center, and houses the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Student Care and Outreach, and the Office of Student Conduct. The building opened in 2001 as the R.N. Ellington Center for Health and Wellness. The Ellington Center was relocated in 2013, and the building became home to other student support offices. The Elon Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the renaming of the building in April 2020 after over a year of consideration. The renaming dedication was held on September 10, 2021. It is the first building on Elon’s campus to be named in honor of a Black person. Janice Wright Ratliff joined the Elon staff in 1981 as an administrative assistant and one of the first Black staff members. Throughout her career she served in various student support offices. She is recognized most notably for her mentorship of Black students at Elon. She retired in 2016 after 35 years of service.
