Background and Context
Lux Hall is the primary liberal arts education building at Meredith College. The building was originally named for James Yadkin Joyner who served as North Carolina's Superintendent of Education. Joyner was handpicked by segregationist Governor Charles B. Aycock to oversee the state's public school system during the era of Jim Crow. Joyner also served as a member of the Meredith College board of trustees for multiple decades.
