Background and Context
This portrait of the young Charles Todd Quintard as a priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee is among the historical portraits of university founders and scenes hanging in the Executive Offices of the University of the South in Walsh Ellett Hall. Quintard was a slave-owner, and he served as chaplain to the First Tennessee Regiment in the Confederate Army. He was the second Episcopal Bishop of Tennessee, and from 1867-1872 he served as the first vice-chancellor.
