Painted portrait of Ellison Capers
Background and Context
This portrait of Ellison Capers, seventh Episcopal Bishop of South Carolina and Chancellor of the University of the South from 1904 to 1908, is among the historical portraits of the founders and officials of the University of the South hanging in Convocation Hall.

According to The Sewanee Alumni News of November 1949, the artist, Grace Annette Dupré, was Capers's niece, and the painting came into the University's possession in late 1949. It was hung in the University Library (Convocation Hall), “making a part of a collection considered to be one of the finest groups of Episcopal bishops in America.”

Capers served the Confederacy in the American Civil War and, as the "bishop soldier," achieved post-war fame as a paragon of the Lost Cause.
