-
The Science Library at the University of Georgia was built in 1968 and dedicated to Shirley Mathis McBay in 2022 in honor of her being the first Black student to earn a Ph.D from UGA.
McBay earned her doctorate in mathematics from UGA in 1966. She taught math at Spelman College in Atlanta for 15 years, chaired the National Science Foundation’s committee on equal opportunity in science and engineering, and served as the dean of student affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While at MIT, McBay launched the Quality Education for Minorities Network, a nonprofit dedicated to improving education for underrepresented students throughout the country.
